MOUNTIT

Work category

Every day approximately 30,000 people and 3,000 companies in Denmark are handling plasterboards. Being a heavy and laborious job, it takes two men to push a plasterboard trolley, two men to lift boards from the trolley, two men to place them where they are stocked, and, finally, two men to mount them.

Until lately no adequate machines have helped workers handle these boards without the risk of physical damage to construction workers. In collaboration with interested parties, the Danish design consultancy CPH Design began searching for a solution to this obvious challenge of construction workers. By thoroughly analysing the use of plasterboards by workers on a wide range of construction sites, it was found that 30-40% of time spent on plasterboard mounting was non-value adding activity.

These observations among others led to the development of the three members of the Mountit family, being the Multitrolley, the Stacker, and the Mounter. The Multitrolley lifts and transports standard packages of plasterboards containing up till 40 boards (1.3 tons). 24 boards at a time can easily be manoeuvred by a single person through a door opening, as the Multitrolley can be tilted and raised to an upright position. From the Multitrolley the Stacker receives the package of plasterboards where they are stocked until further handling. The Mounter is a small handy ‘sack truck’ that lifts one board off the Stacker, which makes it possible for a single person to fix the plasterboard on the wall.

The Mountit family turns all heavy handling of plasterboards into history and even improves efficiency at construction sites by a 40% improvement in workflow. Mountit removes all heavy lifting that workmen today have to carry out, thereby reducing the risk of work injuries related to heavy lifting. It turns out that taking the weight off construction workers makes them happier and they are more likely to go grocery shopping after work and play with their kids in the evening.
