Body category The Childbirth Assistant is a set of basic equipment designed to make childbirth outside hospitals safer and more comfortable. In Latin America, Africa and South Asia, more than 20 million women every year do not have access to any kind of health institution to deliver their babies and they therefore have to rely solely on midwives, who often lack even basic equipment. This statistic inspired the Mexican designer Francisco Lindoro to enhance the experience of childbirth for all the persons that are involved by creating a dignifying way to start life for babies, giving safe conditions to the mothers while having their babies and improving the work conditions for millions of midwifes around the world. “One of the three major causes of death related to childbirths for mothers and babies is infections. My design provides a whole set of sterilized equipment that makes their delivery safer and more comfortable and because of that it reduces the stress in mothers during labor,” explains Francisco Lindoro. To understand the difficulties and procedures involved in giving birth in less than ideal circumstances, Lindoro spent a day assisting midwives at an antenatal clinic in Topilejo, Mexico. “In most of developing countries midwives are the ones attending the biggest percentage of labors. Midwives are not equipped with specialized equipment that considers their needs,” Says Francisco Lindoro . The childbirth kit comes in a container that keeps all the elements sealed and sterilized and is equipped with many things necessary for a successful delivery, including sterile hospital gowns and gloves, a ‘birthing mat’, scissors, umbilical cord clamp, forceps, sutures and even a sling in which to carry the baby after birth. “All the instruments have been thought for an easy use and interaction. The shapes of each piece suggest the way to handle and use. Every part of the process could be performed by a single person so in case the midwife is alone or in an isolated place she can perform every step by herself. The physical appearance of each piece has been designed with a soft and appealing look so it is not perceived as a threatening piece of medical equipment and this helps to maintain relax the patient,” explains Francisco Lindoro.
